Stella Pop: Are You Twitter Tired? - Part Two

Are You Twitter Tired?

The Tweeting End is Nearer than You Think.

Part Two

The last time I left you, I was ranting about the end of Twitter. Sorry for the rant but my twitter nerves are frazzled and I’ve seen one to many messages about hair cuts, auto repair or completely irrelevant messaging that never points to the originating site, blog or subject matter. You know that points back to the place we found you in the first place and gives relevance. I know you’re all feeling the same way, I hear it quietly whispered every week at parties, networking and in my biz travels. Here’s the next installment on the Twittering world, I’ve included the full article for your convenience:

Stella Pop: Are You Twitter Tired? From YoStella

I know, it’s really cool right now to be involved with the world-o-tweets and because everybody including my grandmother has a twitter account. She’s tweeting away about her favorite denture cleaner, how to cheat better at bridge and Reader Digest’s’s latest diagnosis of her imagined medical conditions. Now, I love my grandmother but that’s just plain scary.

This article is really two things: it’s a big set of questions and my observations. Let’s start with the real question for you social butterflies: Do you dare to read more because I might be right? Right about what you ask? Well, read on and find out the truth about the future of Twitter and maybe get the chance to do some serious social consideration.
Better ordered a venit latte for this read and mute your TweetDeck!

Take a look at my list of clear markers predicting the end of twitter’s popularity or least some nasty down trending:

  1. Google and Bing are now indexing tweets by subject and popularity.  What does this mean? It means, watch out because we’re about to see a massive jump in the number of tweets for a million reasons but mostly for search engine optimization purposes. Massive and meaningless tweets - how perfect. I’m all goose bumps over the prospect.
  2. If you look closely and are honest with a comparison of other dead or dying trends, you’ll see that Twitter is slowly developing the classic signs of exit trending as a fad. What is the exit trend? Phase one early adopters are now being joined by everyone else and I mean everyone, remember my grandmother. This means one thing. The shine is off and the trend known as twitter is going in only one direction, down. This doesn’t mean pull the cord and jump out now. It means make the most of what’s left of the trend but do it carefully. Please allow me to explain more.
  3. Millions of us (including myself) are mindlessly tweeting away. A tweet-aholic nation and each of us thinking that our followers are hanging on every bit of twitter chatter. Oh please, get real! Sorry for my contempt. I believe we’re wearing out twitter welcome, as a messaging vehicle and the last forty years of impression based TV advertising proves it. How you ask?
  4. The proof lies in TV commercials and how people are using every possible method to avoid viewing TV ads: Tivo, DVRHuluiTunes and YouTube. Twitter is becoming the last best impression advertising vehicle.  We just don’t know it yet. If you care about your organization’s message, you better make good use of the audience you earned by not wearing out your welcome with massive amounts of mindless tweeting and outside linking from within those tweets. Why?
  5. If your not creating new and original content and then tweeting it, you better start looking up because the meteor that caused the extinction of the TV and print dinosaurs is heading your way. Better to be first to get out of the way by using your brain and creativity to get some original content. Want another piece of evidence ?
  6. Let’s start with the numbers, that’s where it appears first. Check your twitter stats carefully - what is the trending? Can you tell if your followers are paying less attention? Remember numeric trending or statistics develop slowly over time and usually by the time an organization realizes the gig is up, it’s way to late . If the number of click-throughs is trending down and the number of tweets is trending up, you have a problem. You probably have worn out your welcome already and abused the premission you’ve originally received, down trending is usually the first signal. What does it mean?
  7. It probably means your tweeting way to much about nothing in general and no one is paying that much attention anyway. And you’ve developed a flawed strategy, by linking through to outside content that someone else created and that people can find on there own, without you. Have you become a content aggregator on a particular subject without creating a true connection? Or have you become an impression based tweeter and will that work for the long haul?
  8. Think about your own habits, do you look at every TV commercial during your favorite TV show? No you don’t. Come on you now, you choose to watch a particular show for entertainment. And the network makes money selling advertising which they show you throughout the show. But people are tuned out to these ads and use many methods to avoid them all together. You aren’t watching those ads, statistics show declining commercial viewership. But they’re right in front of you (like tweets) appearing every few minutes making especially loud noises to get your attention. Kind of like the tweets emanating from your desktop, laptop & mobile device  What do we do in the long run, if we know that it probably isn’t interesting, creative or relevant info?
  9. We tune it out, we surf to other channels, we do anything else but you don’t listen or participate. The viewer has checked out or moved on to something else only to return when the content that they appears again. Look at the life span of TV commercial, remarkable and pitifully short. Isn’t this what Twitter is becoming? Twitter is the new impression based advertising. Think about it.

Check back next week for the final installment of: “Are You Twitter Tired? Well the Tweeting End is Nearer Than You Think.” I’ve got another couple examples as to why Twitter has become simply impression based advertising or mindless chatter.

Stella says we’re social at Stella Pop. We first develop an overall content and custom publishing strategy then consider how to work in social networking a distribution tool. Not first as a strategy then jam in the content as an after thought.
