Miss D.C. hopes to hit it big this month in Las Vegas.
Jen Corey, 22, is getting ready for the 2010 Miss America Pageant. She graduated from American University, and hopes to wow the judges with her voice. She’ll be singing opera for the talent portion.
She is also the only contestant with a “green” platform, as seen in her recent video vignettes for Goodwill. Here’s an example:
Corey and Grammy-nominated artist Kokayi teamed up on the music in the video — combining rap and Corey’s opera talent. You can hear more of their collaboration here.
If you’re interested in sending Corey off in style to Vegas, there’s an official event this week.
It takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Institute for World Politics (1521 16th Street NW).
Donations of $25 to support the Miss D.C. scholarship program will be accepted.
The pageant takes place on Jan. 30. Brooke Catherine Poklemba of Westminster will represent Maryland. Caressa Cameron of Fredericksburg is representing Virginia.

GRAMMY-Nominated DC-based hip-hop artist and music producer Kokayi recently licensed two songs to French film Company Tingo Films. KOKAYI produced and rhymed on the original songs “Believe It” and “LeRoi” which appear in the short film “A l’arraché” directed by Paul Manate. The film is scheduled to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival and scheduled to broadcast on Canal TV on February 3rd.
The film is about about a worker who gets fired and decides to “sacrifice” his leg to get the insurance. The main character is played famous French soccer player Vikash Dhorasoo.
Kokayi can easily be labeled the hardest working and most successful hip-hop artist in the District of Columbia. Kokayi, nominated for a GRAMMY award in 2009 for his work with singer Wayna, has also produced for countless DC singers and hip-hop artists while successfully maintaining his busy grind as a performance artist. Joining the indie music label QN5 in 2009, a NY-based label with a reputable roster of acts, including Maryland-based Substantial, Kokayi continues to effectively market and reap the benefits from his skills as a hip-hop performer, producer and songwriter.
Kokayi will appear on NBC News Channel 4 next Tuesday, Jan. 19th at 3pm with Miss DC Jen Corry to talk about his recent work with Goodwill, which includes producing and writing music for their current campaign efforts. Read more about that HERE.
WASHINGTON, Jan 07, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Campaign includes Rap Song featuring Jen Corey and Grammy Nominated Artist, Kokayi, as well as Video Series of Miss DC Shopping for Recycled Furniture in Support of Her Recycling Platform for Miss America Pageant Goodwill(R) of Greater Washington, the creator of the nationally recognized DC Goodwill Fashion Blog is about to kickoff a month long recycling and mission awareness campaign featuring Jen Corey, Miss District of Columbia 2009.
The launch of the campaign is timed to showcase Corey’s recycling platform as she prepares to represent our nation’s capital at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas on January 30th, as well as generate greater awareness for Goodwill’s mission during its slowest donation season of the year.
The promotion is two tiered. The first element includes a series of short video vignettes that will be featured on the DC Goodwill Fashion Blog (www.fashionofgoodwill.org/blog) each Friday between January 8th and January 22nd. The intimate videos follow Corey as she shops at Goodwill Stores for recycled furniture and accessories to furnish and transform her new apartment from empty and drab to chic and colorful.
The second component is a rap song with lyrics influenced by Goodwill’s job training mission, written and performed by Grammy nominated DC artist and producer, Kokayi (www.kokayi202.com) and sampling Miss Corey singing opera. Corey is a highly trained opera singer and will be giving an opera performance during the Pageant.
Snippets of the single titled “Dream without Boundaries” will be played during each video vignette. The entire song will then be available for purchase online for a $2 donation to Goodwill of Greater Washington.
“Kokayi is extremely talented; and we believe that Jen Corey is an amazing ambassador for Goodwill and our nation’s capital. This campaign will not only demonstrate Miss Corey’s passion for recycling and her tremendous support of her community, but also her incredible singing ability”, said Brendan Hurley, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Goodwill of Greater Washington. “We are very grateful to Miss Corey and Kokayi for donating their time and talents to Goodwill for the benefit of people who are seeking hope, dignity and independence.” Goodwill of Greater Washington provides job training and employment services for people with disadvantages and disabilities right here in the Washington, DC region.
The video and musical concepts were the brainchild of local PR and Creative Agency, Stella Pop (www.stellaspopfactory.com). Stella Pop has generously provided pro bono consulting and video production services. Dream without Boundaries was recorded and mixed by Nicolas Laget at the Sweet Spot Studio (www.sweetspotstudio.com).
Goodwill of Greater Washington’s mission is to educate, train, employ and place people with disadvantages and disabilities, creating a stronger workforce and a more vital community while building dignity for the people we serve through the removal of barriers to personal success.
